Winter Family Photoshoot at Tibble Fork Reservoir

Is it just me, or am I the only one that’s been misspelling Tibble Fork for the last decade? I saw a sign up there during my last shoot and realized I’ve probably blogged it wrong about 10 times.

This family is a blast to photograph. I especially love photographing my regular clients because I can see how their family grows and changes through the years. This family opted for a shorter winter shoot this time, and even though we were missing the snow, I love how this shoot turned out. We shot in the shade by the only patch of snow I could find and it totally worked with their boots and sweaters. There’s something about layers and sweaters that make winter shoots so much fun and also a great change from summer sessions. Also notice their boots! I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve seen toddlers and little kids in Sunday shoes up at the reservoir in tears. Dress your family in boots, it will fit the scenery better and your kids will be able to smile more naturally since they can feel their toes.

Last but not least, If you want a few family portraits you can change out seasonally, consider asking your family photographer for a shoot in late November or early December so you can display it during the Holidays every year. I love all the pictures of my family over the years, and I don’t want to just display what is current. I’d rather have our family pictures taken each year in a different season so then I can change them out every few months. I’ll put up my fall color family portrait in Sept, and my Winter shoot in December, and then switch it out to something summery in the spring. The older the picture gets the better, it’s fun to have pictures up in the house of when my kids were little. I just recently started thinking about pictures as seasonal decor (instead of just hanging what’s most current), and it’s been fun sorting through images to figure out what I want to print. If you like that idea, then have fun digging through old pictures, it’s fun to get lost in them!
