BYU Campus was a great spot for this family’s pictures. They have a couple of kids attending the University and it was close to home. It’s also a really great place to shoot if you have a family that likes a green, manicured-grounds look. It’s a little more classic looking than the wild-field which appeals to some. I love them both, but choosing a spot that your client’s love is what’s important!
When you are placing a family for pictures, balance in height and color are really important to pay attention to. Notice how I spaced out the two light shirts, as well as the blacks (i.e. the black shirt and pants). I tell all my clients to vary their dominant color so I’m not limited on where I can put people, and this family did a great job with that. Notice how none of them are wearing the same colored shirt (what you are wearing on top is usually the dominant color). I still have to play with balance a little no matter what, but it’s much easier when people aren’t wearing the exact same color. I also spaced out Dad and the two boys so none of them were standing next to each other because they were all about the same height. Notice how it makes the photo totally balanced so nothing sticks out or seems out of place. When a family picture is balanced, I notice the people – not how they are standing or what they are wearing. Thats my goal, I want the focus to be on the family, the expressions, and personalities.
