My photography business grew from a desire to learn how to take professional portraits of my kids, while also capturing the cute and sweet moments of their childhood. Their portraits and candid images are such a treasure to me now which is why my photography style has evolved into what it is today - family portraits with candid moments mixed in to capture personalities and family relationships

During family photos, finding the right pose and positioning can make a significant difference in capturing a warm and close-knit atmosphere. One of the biggest questions my clients have is “What do I do with my hands?” Having been a Park City Utah and Utah County photographer for many years I have learned some tips along the way that I can share.

Nothing distracts more from a beautiful family photo than dangling arms! The best thing to do is use the person next to you to give your hands something to do, instead of letting them dangle by your side. Here are a few things you can do.

  1. Hold your wrist – It gives those hand something to do so you don’t have to rely on the person next to you.
  2. Shoulder hug – This works great for kids that are between elbow and shoulder height next to their parents.
  3. Pockets – A timeless classic. Just make sure to keep your arms relaxed. If they are relaxed you’ll have a slight bend in your elbow.
  4. Double hand hold. My tried and true favorite to give little ones something to do with both their hands. It’s easy to understand, and do, and keeps them close to the person they are next to.

Remember, the key is to keep it natural and genuine. The goal is to capture moments that reflect the love, warmth, and closeness within your family. Try these tips for your next family session.
