Posing tips for Adult Children & Spouses

Extended Family

Just as your children grow older and the family dynamics changes, so does the look and feel of your family photography session.  I understand how important these moments are, and want to make sure your family portraits are as timeless and joyful as you imagine. To help make your session seamless, here are three easy posing tips for adult children & spouses. These tips will make everyone feel comfortable, natural, and connected, ensuring the final images are ones you’ll treasure forever.

Keep Close and Connected

When standing with their spouses, encourage your kids to close any gaps between them. A simple handhold, an arm around a waist, or even resting a hand on a shoulder can make all the difference. These small touches show warmth and connection, creating a natural, loving vibe in the photos. If they feel awkward, remind them to focus on their partner. A quick glance or soft laugh can create genuine moments of connection that photograph beautifully.

Relax the Hands

Hands are often forgotten but can make or break a pose. Remind your adult children and their spouses to keep their hands relaxed—whether they’re holding each other’s hands, tucking a hand in a pocket, or resting it gently on their partner. Stiff or misplaced hands can look unnatural, so the key is to keep them soft and purposeful. If they’re unsure what to do with their hands, encourage interaction! A hand brushing a cheek or playful movement (like a quick twirl or snuggle) adds personality to photos.

Have Fun with Movement

Poses don’t always have to be static! Movement adds energy and life to your photos. Encourage your kids and their spouses to walk together, sway side-to-side, or lean into each other while sharing a laugh. These little movements keep things natural and help everyone relax. Let go of perfection. Some of the best shots come from candid moments when people feel at ease and playful. Trust me—I’ll capture the magic!

Bonus: Let Lexi Guide the Flow

I specialize in making families feel comfortable and confident. You don’t need to stress about remembering every detail—I’ll guide your adult children and their spouses through poses, prompts, and interactions that feel genuine and true to your family dynamic.
