There’s something incredibly special about photographing extended families. It’s not just about getting everyone in the same frame—it’s about freezing a moment in time that tells the story of generations, relationships, and the legacy you’re building together. This family’s session at beautiful Wheeler Farm in Salt Lake City was the perfect example of why I absolutely love these kinds of shoots.
Why Choose an Extended Family Session?
Life moves fast. Kids grow up, parents become grandparents, and schedules fill up before we even realize another year has flown by. That’s why extended family sessions are so important—they bring everyone together, pause time for just a little while, and give you tangible memories to hold onto.
Whether it’s for a family reunion, a milestone celebration, or simply a “just because we’re all here” moment, these sessions create space to honor the people who’ve shaped you and the connections that mean the most.
During this session, we captured all the combinations—grandparents with their grandkids, individual families, cousin groups, and that big, joyful shot of everyone together. These images aren’t just for today. They’re for the walls of your home, for future generations, and for the days when you want to look back and feel what that moment felt like.
Why Wheeler Farm?
Wheeler Farm is one of my favorite hidden gems for family portraits in the Salt Lake City area. With its rustic charm, open fields, and those gorgeous Wasatch mountains peeking through in the background, it gives the perfect mix of natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. It’s ideal for big groups to spread out and feel at ease, especially with little ones who love to roam and play.
Posing Tip
Got a group of three kiddos? Start by posing the two smaller ones first—have them stand close or give each other a sweet little hug. Once they’re settled, bring in the taller one to join the fun. Have them snuggle in from behind or gently wrap their arms around the little ones. It creates a natural, cozy vibe and shows off their connection in the cutest way!
Let’s Tell Your Family Story
If you’ve been thinking about an extended family session, now is the time. Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment—let’s capture the real ones, the ones you’ll want to remember forever. I’d be honored to help tell your story.
