My photography business grew from a desire to learn how to take professional portraits of my kids, while also capturing the cute and sweet moments of their childhood. Their portraits and candid images are such a treasure to me now which is why my photography style has evolved into what it is today - family portraits with candid moments mixed in to capture personalities and family relationships

Getting Teens to Smile: BTS of a Senior Photographer in Utah

Let’s talk about one of the biggest challenges in senior photography: getting teenagers to relax and show their genuine personality in front of the camera.

Getting teens to smile, behind the scenes of how I get create amazing senior photos. Most teens feel self-conscious during photo sessions. They’re hyperaware of how they look. They’re not sure what to do with their hands. They feel awkward, so it’s hard getting teens to smile their true, genuine smile. But as a Senior Photographer Utah families have trusted for over a decade, I’ve figured out exactly how to help teens feel comfortable and confident during their sessions so I can get pictures like the ones in this post. Keep reading for tips….

My Approach to Senior Sessions – Getting Teens to Show Off Their Real Smile

  1. Giving specific direction so they never feel lost or unsure
  2. Keeping things moving so they don’t have time to overthink
  3. Creating genuine moments instead of forcing poses.
  4. Bringing up hobbies or subjects they enjoy so their real personality shines through.

Creating Photos They’ll Actually Love

Senior photos should celebrate who your teenager is right now. Not a stiff, formal version of themselves. The real them. During sessions in Park City and Utah County, I work with each senior to capture their unique style and personality. Whether they’re athletic, artistic, quiet, or outgoing, the photos should feel authentic to who they are.

Making Parents Happy Too

Here’s what I hear from parents, “I can’t believe you got my son to smile! He never smiles for pictures”

One mom told me she’ll cherish the photos of her teenage son actually smiling and looking happy forever. That’s exactly what I’d love to create for you.
