Classic Color Palettes for Stunning Family Photos

Extended Family

November 1, 2024

back to blog

If you’re gearing up for your family photography session in beautiful Utah County, you know that picking out outfits can feel like a daunting task. But here’s a little secret: choosing a classic color palette can make this part of your prep way easier—and your photos absolutely timeless.

When I’m talking “classic,” think of a color family that’s soft, earthy, and easy on the eyes: whites, creams, greys, camel, brown, and black. These colors create a beautifully coordinated look that highlights each family member without overwhelming the shot. Plus, they’re perfect for any Utah setting, whether you’re in the mountains or surrounded by the golden tones of a late autumn field. Here’s how to create that cohesive, classic look your photos will love.

My clients outfits from this session were right on point. Here are some similar outfits for you to use for your next session.

1. Start with the Basics: Whites and Creams

Whites and creams are the backbone of a classic color palette. These shades bring a light, airy feel that’s flattering on every skin tone and really pops against Utah’s natural landscapes. They’re especially lovely in creating a soft look that’s both fresh and inviting.

Tip: Use whites and creams as your foundational colors, such as a cream sweater on you or a white dress for your little one. They add brightness and are great for layering with other earthy tones.

2. Add Depth with Greys

Grey is a versatile, grounding color that complements any neutral palette. It’s subtle but adds a touch of depth and sophistication. Light grey sweaters or shirts for the kids or a cozy cardigan for you are wonderful options.

Tip: Try mixing different shades of grey within your family’s outfits. Lighter greys add a gentle touch, while charcoal or darker greys bring in a bit of contrast that balances out the lighter creams and whites.

3. Bring Warmth with Camel and Brown

Camel and brown tones add the perfect amount of warmth to your photos. They’re rich and earthy without feeling heavy, bringing a little hint of coziness that suits both autumn and winter sessions.

Tip: Dress dad in a camel-toned sweater or a pair of brown pants, or add a tan cardigan for yourself to bring in this warmth. These colors work wonders for adding that golden, rustic feel to your family photos.

4. Anchor the Palette with Black

Some people shy away from black in family photos, but it can be the perfect color to ground your look when used thoughtfully. Black works beautifully for adding contrast and keeping the classic feel sophisticated, especially against lighter tones.

Tip: Try a black pair of pants or a dark jacket to break up the softer tones. Just a touch of black, whether in accessories, shoes, or one family member’s outfit, creates a stunning, balanced look.

Putting It All Together: Layer and Mix Textures

With a neutral palette, the magic often lies in the textures you choose. Think soft knits, light cottons, cozy sweaters, and even subtle patterns. Textured fabrics make these neutral colors feel rich and inviting without competing for attention.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix knits, woven fabrics, and even some subtle patterns, like a light plaid in grey or camel. This adds depth and dimension to your photos while keeping everyone in harmony with the classic look you’re aiming for.

Few Last Things to Keep in Mind

Remember that the scenery in Utah County is stunning year-round, so your photos will be gorgeous no matter the season. Choosing a classic color palette of whites, creams, greys, camel, brown, and black is a surefire way to create timeless images that capture your family at its very best. Plus, these colors look amazing in both outdoor and indoor settings, whether you’re surrounded by mountains or in a cozy home setting.

If you’re still unsure about specific outfit choices, take a deep breath! You’re already making a great choice by going with neutrals, and there’s no wrong way to mix and match when you stick to this palette. This is all about capturing the love and connection in your family, so enjoy the process, mama—you’re going to look incredible!
