My photography business grew from a desire to learn how to take professional portraits of my kids, while also capturing the cute and sweet moments of their childhood. Their portraits and candid images are such a treasure to me now which is why my photography style has evolved into what it is today - family portraits with candid moments mixed in to capture personalities and family relationships

Extended Family Photography Session

Extended Family

Planning an extended family photography session is a wonderful opportunity to capture the love and connection shared across generations. However, coordinating multiple family members can be a bit challenging. To help you get the most out of your session, here are three tips I share with my clients to make their session be the very best!

Coordinate Outfits

Choosing the right outfits can make a big impact on the overall look and feel of your photos. A cohesive wardrobe helps create visually appealing images where the focus remains on the family rather than distracting clothing choices. Start by choosing a few base colors (like neutrals) and a couple of accent colors that complement each other. This  ensures everyone looks coordinated without being overly matchy. Don’t forget to add in different textures such as knits, denim, lace, and subtle patterns to add depth to your photos. Avoid loud patterns and logos that can be distracting.

This family did such a great job with their outfit choices. I linked similar outfits so you can wear them in your upcoming session.

Communicate with your Photographer

Your photographer is there to capture the best moments, but they can only do so if they understand your vision and any specific needs or concerns you have. Before your session discuss the overall style you’re aiming for, whether it’s candid, posed, or a mix of both. Share any special requests or must-have shots, like a mother/daughter or candid moments of the grandkids. Your photographer has experience and can provide valuable tips on everything from timing (considering the best lighting) to outfit coordination.

Keep Everyone Comfortable

The best photos are the ones where everyone looks relaxed and natural. If family members, especially children and seniors, are comfortable and happy, it will reflect in the photos. Choose a time when younger children are well-rested and fed. Avoid scheduling during nap times or meal times. Pack snacks, water, and a few toys or activities to keep the kiddos entertained during downtime. Most importantly, encourage a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Avoid putting too much pressure on everyone to look perfect. Enjoy the time together and let your love and connections shine through.

An extended family photography session can capture beautiful, lasting memories. By coordinating outfits, communicating effectively with your photographer, and ensuring everyone is comfortable, you set the stage for a successful and enjoyable session. Remember, the goal is to capture the love and connection that make your family unique. Embrace the moments, and let your photographer work their magic.
