My photography business grew from a desire to learn how to take professional portraits of my kids, while also capturing the cute and sweet moments of their childhood. Their portraits and candid images are such a treasure to me now which is why my photography style has evolved into what it is today - family portraits with candid moments mixed in to capture personalities and family relationships

Summer is such a great time to schedule your family photography session. The relaxed pace, often free from the hectic schedules of the school year, allows families to find a time that works for everyone without the stress of juggling multiple commitments. Summer also offers a variety of fun, outdoor settings such as beaches, parks, and gardens, which can make the photo session itself an enjoyable family experience. Today I am sharing three things to consider when planning your summer family photography session.

Sunset

When planning your photo session, it’s important to consider how late the sun sets, especially if you have young children. As a mom, I understand that late bedtimes can be challenging for little ones. However, good lighting is crucial for quality photographs, and it’s typically best 1-2 hours before sunset, which is around 9pm in Utah. Late sessions can result in tired, cranky kids, making the experience less enjoyable for everyone. To make sure your children are well-rested and happy, discuss with your photographer the possibility of selecting locations that offer beautiful lighting earlier in the evening and follow their recommendation. If you prefer a location that requires a later start for optimal lighting, make sure your kids get plenty of rest the night before so they can stay up happily on the day of your session.

Skincare

In the summer, it’s important to remember that protecting your skin before a photo session is crucial. Make sure your family is wearing sunscreen to prevent sunburns showing in your photos. A sunburned face can be uncomfortable and distracting in the pictures. Try to remember a week or so before your session to sunscreen generously and regularly, to help your family members look healthy and even-toned, allowing their natural beauty to shine through in the photographs.

Temperature

One of the challenges of summer photography is that it can be extremely HOT!  It’s important to be prepared to keep you and  your children comfortable and happy throughout the shoot. Bring along some tissues to dab away any sweat. It’s also important to consider your wardrobe. Try dressing your family in light, breathable clothing so everyone can feel good during your session.

Summertime can be the perfect time to schedule your family photography session. Take advantage of the slower pace and the season’s beauty by creating lasting memories of your family enjoying this special time together.
