If you’ve ever stood in front of a camera and thought, What do I do with my hands?!—you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I get as a Park City family photographer. The good news? There are some simple tricks to help your hands look natural and relaxed in photos. Here are a few of my go-to tips!
Planning a vacation to Park City? This session was taken in Promontory in Park City. It is a beautiful mountain location that is perfect year round for anyone vacationing on the property. Book your session now to capture your next family vacation memories!
Hold Onto a Loved One
One of the easiest ways to make your hands feel less awkward is to interact with your family or partner. Hold hands, wrap an arm around someone, or place a hand on their shoulder. These little touches not only give your hands a purpose but also create a sense of connection in your photos.
Use Your Pockets
Not sure where to put your hands? Slip one (or both) into your pockets! It’s an easy way to look relaxed without overthinking. This trick works especially well for guys who want a casual, confident look.
Keep It Soft
A big mistake people make is holding their hands too stiffly. Instead, keep your fingers gently curved and relaxed. Whether your hand is on someone’s arm, in a pocket, or resting at your side, soft fingers make all the difference in creating a natural pose.
Hold Something
If you’re still feeling unsure, give your hands something to do! Hold onto a hat, a blanket, or even your pup’s leash. Having an object to interact with helps keep your hands from looking stiff or out of place.
Relax & Have Fun!
At the end of the day, the best photos happen when you’re comfortable. Don’t stress too much about perfect hand placement. Just focus on your family, enjoy the moment, and let me guide you through it!
