Wondering what to wear for your summer photography session? It’s one of the most common questions I hear from families preparing for their photos. The key to stunning summer photos is choosing outfits that coordinate—not match—and selecting colors that feel natural, timeless, and flattering in outdoor light.
For this extended family session, the family chose a neutral, earthy color palette with soft, muted tones. The result? Beautifully cohesive photos that complement the summer backdrop perfectly. Here’s how you can achieve the same look:
Start with Neutrals
Neutrals are your best friend! Think soft tans, creams, grays, and denim. These tones keep your photos feeling warm and organic while allowing the focus to stay on your faces and connections—not your outfits.
In these photos, mom’s beige dress and dad’s light gray shirt created the perfect neutral base to build around.
Add Coordinating Tones
Once you’ve chosen your base neutrals, add coordinating tones to bring variety. Notice how the family mixed in:
-
Muted blues (shirts and jeans)
-
Soft pinks (little girl’s dress)
-
Warm earthy shades (rust and mauve tops)
These colors compliment each other without clashing, and they look gorgeous against the green grass and golden light of the mountains.
Keep Patterns Minimal
For larger groups, solid colors work best. A busy pattern can distract in a big photo. Here, everyone wore solids or subtle textures, which kept the look cohesive and timeless.
Think About the Setting
If your session is outdoors (like this one), choose colors that complement nature. The soft neutrals and earthy tones here blended beautifully with the golden fields and mountain backdrop.
Comfort is Key
Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. When you feel good, it shows in your photos!
Stick with neutrals, mix in muted coordinating tones, keep it simple, and let your family’s love and connection shine.
