My photography business grew from a desire to learn how to take professional portraits of my kids, while also capturing the cute and sweet moments of their childhood. Their portraits and candid images are such a treasure to me now which is why my photography style has evolved into what it is today - family portraits with candid moments mixed in to capture personalities and family relationships

Want to know how to be the best photographer for kids and families? Read on! The best family photographers don’t need kids to “cooperate” to get a good photo. Why? Because good family photographers will interact with their littlest clients so they can have fun while having their pictures taken. And if they are having fun, their smiles will be natural too! Here’s my advice for photographs and parents for your next family photo session:

Advice For Photographers:

Ever pull your hair out when trying to get family pictures with little kids? It doesn’t have to be painful, in fact, it should be fun! It’s all about games! If you play with them instead of telling them what to do, they will like working with you and the time will pass much more quickly for them. Here are some of the games I play with kids while I’m working:

  • red rover
  • red light, green light
  • catch (with a soft ball)
  • Simon says
  • follow the leader

Everyone once and a while I’ll still get a two-year-old that just wants Mom and is feeling tired or grouchy. If they aren’t into games with you, then have Mom or Dad play with them and capture that. The little sweetie in this photo was pretty sad and wanted her mom the whole time, but I used some of these tricks and still got great smiles.

Advice For Parents:

Keep a positive attitude even when things don’t go as planned. These parents really enjoyed their kids the whole time, and didn’t get frustrated when their daughter was feeling shy or sad. It keeps the mood light and fun, and because of that, there were still lots of beautiful moments to capture.
