Family photography is so much more than snapping a few posed pictures; it’s about capturing the connection, love, and joy that make your family unique. One of the most powerful ways to capture your family relationships? Connection. Here are a few tips on capturing true connection in family photos, in candids AND portraits.
You might think you just aren’t “photogenic” or that you’re awkward in front of the camera, but what you don’t know, is that you can look great in photos RIGHT NOW. So, it’s great you’re here because I can teach you tried and true ways to looking amazing in photos.
Connection isn’t just about holding hands or standing close— It’s what turns a good photo into something great! Here’s why it matters in your family photos.
1. Why Connection Can Make Your Your Family Portrait Look Amazing
When family members stand close, and create connection between each other like in the above photo, it:
- Creates intimacy: Close, connected poses draw attention to your relationships, making the photo feel warm and inviting.
- Looks natural: Layering subjects slightly behind and in front of one another, gives the photo a sense of flow. The family looks like they are one unit, not just a bunch of people looking at the camera.
2. Guiding You Into Natural Poses
Don’t worry if you feel unsure about posing or how to use touch in your photos—I’m here to guide you! During our session, I’ll suggest small, simple movements that feel organic, like:
- Wrapping your arms around your partner from behind.
- Placing your hand on your child’s back as they lean into you.
- Brushing your child’s hair out of their face or pulling them close for a snuggle.
These little gestures make a big difference in creating candid images and can also make you feel more comfortable when it’s time to smile for a portrait too.
3. Adding Playful Interactions
Connection doesn’t always have to be tender—it can be playful and fun, too! Some of my favorite ways to incorporate lively connection for families with young kids, include:
- Holding hands and spinning your child in a circle.
- Tickle fights or bear hugs that bring out laughter and genuine smiles.
Playful touches create dynamic photos filled with energy and joy—perfect for showcasing the lighthearted side of your young or growing family.
4. Letting Go of Perfection
It’s easy to worry about looking “perfect” in your photos, but the truth is, the best images come when you are enjoying your family. Let me worry about getting the perfect shot, while you enjoy spending time with your loved ones.
5. The Story Connection Tells
At Lexi Rae Photography, I believe that every family has a story to tell, and connection is one of the most powerful storytelling tools in my arsenal, whether I’m capturing a candid of a young family, or a polished family portrait with grown kids.
