Are you ready to schedule your next family photography session but don’t know where to start or what to do? Let me make it easy for you by giving you my Family Photography Session Checklist.
You can download the quick checklist printable HERE and then read below for all the details.
1-3 Months Before
Choose the Right Photographer: Research and select a photographer who specializes in family photography and whose style aligns with your vision. Ask to see a full gallery to make sure they can deliver what you want
Schedule Wisely: Pick a date and time that works best for your family, considering nap times and bedtimes. Keep in mind that sunset in the summer is LATE and lighting is best 1-2 hours before sunset.
Choosing a location: Work with your photographer to find a location that has what you want. Make sure the best timing for lighting at the spot you want works with your schedule. Learn more about choosing a location HERE.
Coordinate Outfits: Select outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Aim to coordinate but not match. Don’t be afraid to mix lots of different types of neutrals with the colors you choose. I share one of my favorite outfit tips HERE.
Be aware of braces: your tweens and teens may need to rethink their band color. If hot pink bands are going to bother you then plan accordingly.
1 Week Before:
Lay out outfits: gather the entire family’s outfits to make sure you aren’t missing anything. Shoes, socks, hair bows, accessories etc. Make sure clothes and shoes fit.
Try it on: It never fails that your child puts on shoes the day of your photography session to find that they no longer fit. Have each member of your family try on their full outfit to make sure it fits just right.
Day of Session:
Plan your meals: Make sure that no one is hungry during your session, especially little ones. Even as adults we get a little cranky when we need to eat!
Outfit double-check: Confirm that everyone’s chosen outfits are clean and ready to go. Check for any wrinkles or stains and do a quick spot clean if needed.
Gather essentials: for young families, pack a bag with essentials like snacks, water bottles, tissues.
Positive vibes only: encourage excitement and positivity about the upcoming session. Remind everyone that it’s a fun opportunity to make memories together and that it means a lot to you.
Travel plans: plan your route to the photography location, considering traffic and potential delays. Leave with plenty of time to spare to avoid rushing. Make sure that you arrive at the location a bit early to allow time for any last-minute outfit adjustments. Use this time to touch up hair and makeup if needed.
Relax and enjoy: once at the location, take a deep breath and relax. Trust in your photographer’s expertise and enjoy the experience with your family. Focus on making memories with your loved ones! Post-session treat: plan a special treat or activity to celebrate after the session, like a picnic in the park or a visit to a favorite ice cream shop. A little incentive goes a long way with little and big kids alike.
