My photography business grew from a desire to learn how to take professional portraits of my kids, while also capturing the cute and sweet moments of their childhood. Their portraits and candid images are such a treasure to me now which is why my photography style has evolved into what it is today - family portraits with candid moments mixed in to capture personalities and family relationships

Simple Tips for Posing with Your Kids

As a family photographer here in Utah, one of my favorite moments is capturing the beautiful, unique connection between parents and their kids. You don’t have to be a professional model to create stunning, heartfelt images. In fact, the best photos happen when you feel comfortable and natural. To help you prepare for your upcoming family photography session, here are some simple tips for posing with your kids that will make the experience fun and stress-free.

You might think you just aren’t “photogenic” or that you’re awkward in front of the camera, but what you don’t know, is that you can look great in photos RIGHT NOW.  So, it’s great you’re here because I can teach my tried and true ways to looking amazing in photos.

1. Embrace the Chaos

Let’s be real: kids can be unpredictable. And that’s okay! Some of the best moments happen when you lean into their energy rather than try to control it. If your little one is being silly, join in! Laugh, tickle, or dance with them. These candid interactions often create the most memorable and genuine photos.

2. Hold Them Close

There’s something so special about seeing a parent holding their child. Whether you’re cradling a baby, giving a toddler a piggyback ride, or wrapping your arm around your teenager’s shoulder, these poses feel timeless and full of love.

3. Find Natural Connections

A great family photo is all about connection. Try focusing on each other instead of the camera. Look into your child’s eyes, whisper something funny in their ear, or kiss the top of their head. These little moments show the bond you share and create photos that truly reflect your family’s dynamic.

4. Relax Your Hands

Hands can feel awkward in photos, especially for class portraits, but keeping them soft and natural makes a big difference. Hold your child’s hand, gently rest your hand on their shoulder, or play with their hair. These subtle gestures add warmth and authenticity to your photos.

5. Trust Your Photographer

Finally, remember that it’s my job to guide you! I’ll help you find flattering angles, suggest poses, and encourage those sweet, natural moments. Your focus should be on enjoying time with your family while I capture the magic.

Family photos are about more than getting everyone to smile at the camera. They’re about capturing your family’s story in this moment—the love, the joy, and even the beautiful chaos. By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll create photos that feel authentic and meaningful. I can’t wait to help you tell your story during your next family session!
